Merlin: Series 5 in Autumn 2012

Merlin co-creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy have given an update on the status of Series 5.

Speaking at the 2012 SFX Weekender, the duo confirmed the show will be back on the BBC in Autumn.

“We’re currently in full scale pre-production for season 5, which will be with you in the Autumn,” said Capps. “We’re locked in a room with with all writers working out how we’re going to do the next 13 episodes. We’ve got some great ideas and some great twists and turns.”

With Doctor Who also returning this Autumn, it will be interesting to see how the BBC schedule both shows.

Shooting on the new series is set to begin March.

Normally apart form dr who and a few other shows, a newer series’ tend to get a bit over the top with stunts action and stuff, but with Merlin, it just gets better and better

I know what you mean, the writers of the series finales of Doctor who try to make each simply more dramatic than the previous ones, not always producing good stories.

I think the 45 minute a week episodes works better for Merlin than Doctor Who because of the ongoing narrative with each week adding to the overall story. With Doctor who, there’s a new adventure every episode and I think each one could benefit with some added screen time for more in-depth stories as in the classic series.

Do you think they’ll show Gwen’s Betrayal or leave it as is?

hopefully leave it as it is, also lancelot has definetely died now ( end of 4×09) so i doubt he will come back, because the knights will no that magic is involved

I went over the episodes S01-03 while trying to think of a redemption arc for Gwen based on the premise that Arthur forgives and loves her but I doubt Arthur will ever trust her.  It turns out that Gwen has been on a Heroine’s Journey and the writers need to just let her continue with that.  But I also found out that Morgana is also on a similar Journey as a Heroine.

It’s perversely interesting that for all she’s done, Morgana could still end up the Hero along with Merlin and Arthur in this series by letting her continue that Journey and I wonder if that’s “some of the great twist and turns.” For instance, Merlin, Gwen, and/or Arthur need to form alliances with her or do some villainous activity to thwart her and possibly one another in order for Magic to be restored.
