I’m kind of nervous as to how it all turns out, and what happens, especially which characters don’t make it out of the finale alive…. and i wonder who says 2, i think it could be Arthur to Agravaine? I’m hoping it isn’t Merlin! This has just made me more anxious…

I’m betting Gaius. Based on the spoilers…it isn’t looking good for him. I’m betting that Merlin will kill Agravaine just because if you watch the trailer, he is walking away from what looks like the cave they were in together. The look on his face tells me that he killed someone. I hope that Gaius lives though…

        • Anonymous

Well, on second thought it could be someone else.  Gaius is in the picture where Merlin wears his nice clothes, assumingly a royal wedding.  If that is the case, Gaius lives.  It would be a terrible shame if Merlin lost the last confidante he has.

      • http://twitter.com/Agent_paw Bella Mckinlay

Well it was Arthur, just not to Merlin :) but to Gwen, well it’s okay because it turned out alright for them.

    • Anonymous

Don’t worry  How can it be Arthur!  They are not going to change the legend that much!    Agravaine seems to go, but who else, maybe Gaius?

does anyone have any ideas on number 17?

      • Anonymous

Read somewhere that Aithusa swears allegiance to Morgana. Thta’s why it might not be there.

        • Anonymous

How could this be possible ? Dragons obey to dragonlords only. Their allegiance go to dragonlords. Kilgharrah said once to Merlin that even if he wanted not to obey, he could not. Why should it be different for Aithusa ?…unless we’ve been told lies since ep.2.13.

          • Anonymous

I really have no idea HOW it would be possible.  It is just a rumour after all.  I would much prefer a happier outcome for such a cute little thing, too!

I think it will be Arthur saying number 4 to Merlin. (Hurra!)  Pieced together with other spoilers it looks like Merlin is going to volunteer to cover the tracks, and Arthur comes back for him.

‘You and you alone can restore ‘the king’s faith”  ???  Kilgarrah to Merlin

There is also someone making a comment  that there can be only one who could have called the dragon.   Will Arthur find out that Merlin is a dragonlord?  That would be great!   I dare not hope for more.

I think that will be the closest to Arthur finding out about Merlin’s magic that we are going to get.

I am pretty sure that they will keep a reveal for series 5.  Colin Morgan hinted strongly at that.

If Morgana dies and comes back, would she not be harder to fight in series 5.  A bit like trying to kill the living dead…???

          • Anonymous

no ive heard that we see her in (heaven) and she is told that she has yet to live more life and fulfil her destiny, therefore they let her live, when she wakes, Mordred is stood beside her!

          • Anonymous

I’ve heard that either. Someone pretending to be from the Merlin crew wrote this story. Sara Hamill tweeted it was “rubbish” but who knows ?

Has anyone an idea what the mistake is Merlin has made this series which will cause him lots of trouble in series 5?

    • Anonymous

i know this is odd, but saving Athusia?

      • Anonymous

What if “series” meant the 4 seasons and not only season 4 ? If you remember well, Merlin once helped Mordred although Kilgharrah had told him not to because it would be a big mistake…

        • Anonymous

That was my first thought, but then I noticed that the spoiler said it was something Merlin did THIS series.

          • http://twitter.com/Numberpengu Pengu

I don’t know if to agree, the world of Merlin is very plausible and i see the writers never making Aithusa go against a dragon lord even more it’s own creator (kinda) i find Mordred will again be the mistake, as if he does come back and Morgana dies he can bring her back with all the gateway stuff, we will just have to wait and see(and i hope Aithusa is not evil he is so cute)

          • Anonymous

Well, he is cute, and I’d rather Merlin has a bunch of little white dragons in his back garden, but apart from saving Mordred, and letting Morgana live I can think of no other mistake!

          • http://twitter.com/Numberpengu Pengu

well mysticmeg i can’t reply to you directly now but i can reply like this, anyway saving Morgana is not a mistake i thought of and i find that will be the fact, as i think then Mordred will come back and join her

        • http://twitter.com/KenyaLSmith kenya smith

I was thinking the same thing.

        • Anonymous

Yes, I agree with you — I thought it was a BIG mistake at the time. And I hear Modred is in this episode. And he’s older now and can be an evil influence in his own right…..

      • Anonymous

Yeah I think you are right about this one.  Quite a few other people agree. I’ve seen on another website that maybe Aithusia is swearing alligiance to Morgana.

      • Jerry the Time Tomato

NO!!! I’M WRITING A STORY ABOUT CUTE, INNOC?ENT AITHUSA, HE CAN’T BE EVIL!!!!

      • Anonymous

I don’t really know, I think that it is either saving Aithusa or helping Mordred but who knows. This is a very big teaser and we might just have to wait and see what happens at the end of this last episode to find out what Merlin has done and why he has done it!!

  • Anonymous

That sounds fabulous, and really plausible.kilgarrah did say that a white dragon would be a good sign (eventually) for Arthur and Merlin and the things to come.  Thanks for the insight, MikeAP001.

    • Anonymous

Let’s assume Aithusa is Morgana’s new ally because the white dragon breathed new life into the witch and making her more powerful than Merlin (?).

Here’s my thought about her new ally:

We know that in the Merlin-o-verse, the young do things, often without
the approval of their elders, that have unintended consequences.  Maybe,
Aithusa did that now.  And, the dragon was unaware that a weapon forged with the dragon’s breath would have enormous power (S1Ep09)…

According to Balinor in S2Ep13, dragon’s are neither good nor evil and that dragon’s don’t act without reason. We also know now that Arthur is destined to become Albion’s (not Camelot’s!) greatest king.  But, Albion is just now forming (?).  And Arthur and Merlin have a ways to go to fulfill his destiny of keeping Arthur from being less of a “prat” (S1Ep01) to become the king who will lead the way to Albion and a new age.

Perhaps, Aithusa knew this. But, he also knew that Arthur’s progress despite Merlin’s efforts was painfully slow (Merlin still hasn’t revealed his magic to Arthur after some 6 or 7 Merlin years).  In order for Arthur to create the hoped for Albion, Aithusa concluded that the quickest way was to revive Morgana.

Borrowing from Heroic Archetype’s Arcs for Redemption, her choices basically are: 1) to continue to fight against Arthur to become the Queen who will restore the old religion to Camelot (seems likely she’ll try this), 2) to form an alliance with Arthur and make him see the error of his ways towards her and her kind (seems unlikely) in developing Albion or 3) some combination of the two (perhaps in the real world but that would be boring).

So, I can expect to see some further conflict between Merthur and Mord-gana in Season 5 and later which will eventually lead to an alliance among the five kingdoms against Mord-gana and her allies (Saxon, Jutes, etc? symbolized by Aithusa).  But, I can also see that such an alliance will only continue as long a Albion forms, if it doesn’t go to plan then Aithusa’s alliance will end.

  • Anonymous

I suppose we’ve all guessed at this point who the “surprise ally” is… :)

    • Nathan Tancock

      Really? Who?

      • Jerry the Time Tomato

I think it may be Gwen, but I don’t know…

  • http://twitter.com/Numberpengu Pengu

I must now add this fact, that Merlin has caused a mistake earlier in the series to whatever it is, i do not think it is about Mordred, more on the fact that i do not want it to be, save Aithusa, by the way #11 seems like someone like Gwaine who will betray her later on in the episode.

    • Anonymous

I agree, the surprise new “ally” is probably Gwaine.  Based on his
actions throughout the series, he probably made a deal with Morgana to
save Gaius and Elyan but will later claim  that his loyalty and
allegiance belong to the rightful sovereign of Camelot… or some such.
Then, he’ll try to kill her when the time is right.

      • Anonymous

Its more likely to be Mordred, I think despite how Gwaine has been treated, he remains loyal. Its a suprise because we havn’t seen Mordred since the second series. As for the two characters, I can’t see any of the knights being killed off so its likely to be either Agravaine, Helios or Gaius. I really hope its not Gaius, he’s one of my favourites but as Merlin moves closer to his destiny, it seems increasingly likely that his chracter will be written out.

        • http://twitter.com/Numberpengu Pengu

Yeah but i do not think Mordred will be a ‘suprise’ ally

  • Anonymous

Agravaine will almost definitely die because he finds out Merlin has magic and that he is Emeris of how ever you spell it. They won’t let Morgana find out about that, so he will die before he tells anyone, what a shame he was cool. :(

  • Anonymous

It would be brilliant if this was so. My only worry is that so far, Merlin hasn’t really explored the historical context eg. no mention of Christianity, Saxons. On this basis, I don’t think we will see the conflict between the British and the Germanic tribes, only the ongoing feud between Arthur, Morgana and Mordred.

    • Anonymous

The  conflict between the various tribes might not be shown— but who is to say that those tribes aren’t in a secret alliance with Mordred and Morgana who are acting as a proxy in a war with Arthur?

It wouldn’t be the first time in history or literature to have such things happen.  Uther introduced the new, modern era of the scientific method removing magic from the land while Morgana is destined to bring about the return of the old religion (based upon the Germanic tribes?) and Arthur and Merlin (Merthur?) are to meld these together in the form of Albion (a fair and just land of peace and acceptance of diverse peoples?  Or what Gaius said to Arthur in the Servant of Two Masters).

In that, we have a thesis, antithesis and synthesis of the old and new = something maybe better (in literature it usually is much better).

But, we’ve seen that Merthur’s job isn’t done yet. Merlin still has to convince Arthur to change some of the conceits of his father and become more a a friend to the old religion.  That’s why Aithusa would have been expected to save Morgana so that events will occur to allow the age of science and sorcery to exist as complements to each other.    And, everything can be done without mentioning the actual historical tribes but through symbolism (such as Aithusa being the living representation of the Saxons?).

At least that’s how the Heroic Archetype would have it. Anyway, we’ll have a better idea with season 5…

BTW, I still don’t know who Morgana’s surprise ally was in the teasers.  Someone’s got to explain that to me.  If anything, I was sure it would be Gwaine because that would fit his profile…

      • Anonymous

I thought the suprise ally was Aithussa which came to Morgana’s aid, or maybe i missed something. Its interesting, can’t really draw any conclusions at the moment, we’ll  see how things turn out. I thought aswell when Aithussa turned up that he could represent the enemy but morgana and mordred rather than the saxons as in the traditional legends.

Maybe the saxons are the neighboring kingdoms, they have never been clealry mentioned but supposedly in the merlin world, there are five kingdoms, one of them being Mercia which historically was saxon. Another thing that comes to mind is Hengest in series 2 who seemed to be chief of some bandits, again not sure whether Hengest was a saxon as he was in the legends.

It seems that Camelot does have a religion of sorts shown in the celebration of Samhain but this hasn’t been really explored. From what has been shown, the new ways only refer to the old in the sense that religous practice is forbidden but does it make up an entirely new religion, if so could this be christianity?

In episodes such as Aithussa and series 2 ep 1, there seems to be a different history entirely. More attention needs to be paid to the setting, it would be intriguing to get into the mindset of the writers in a QA session.

        • Anonymous

Yes, there are questions that the show has brought up that need to be answered to explain certain events and motives within the context of this show.  And the possible answers are interesting especially if we invoke symbolism.

For instance, Series 4 was the season of undoing the prior conception of the Merlin-o-verse and started with the Darkest Hour and ended with the Light of the Sun (Aithusa) breathing life into Morgana.  She has a second chance.  So, what will she do with that?

Likewise, Arthur has started a new life of his own with Gwen, he has shown remorse for his past actions especially when he tries to be like Uther, will Arthur become Uther II or develop into the king that will accept the differences of others like the Druids?

Even Merlin has a fresh start (the new Court clothes during the coronation) and new problems. Unbeknownst to him,  he must now contend with Morgana and others with Magic who rescued her, including (maybe) another Dragon Lord(?) or dragon(s) that acts independently of a Dragon Lord, and Merlin will eventually need to tell Arthur about the secret.  How will Merlin guide Arthur through that?

And Camelot’s religion… it seems to be Celtic. We know the Feasts of Beltaine and Samhain are celebrated but we know little else. And, how does the land of fairy and Avalon fit in to all of it.  It would be nice to have details.

So many questions and so few answers. It almost makes you want to see Season 5 now.

I remember someone has warned Merlin not to save the egg… Maybe Gauis?

  • Anonymous

    IS just a thought….

Morganas’s story wasn’t destined to draw to its end just now , so Aithusa brought her back to life, healed her, so that she may play her part in the creation of Albion no matter the cost.
Aithusa is younger than the other dragon, it may be more clear-sighted, so it has to have foreseen something the other hasn’t yet to help the witch away from hell.
I’m definite that it will be taking Merlin’s side shortly to clear all doubts on its strange gesture of assistance toward the witch

  • http://twitter.com/Agent_paw Bella Mckinlay

What was Merlin’s terrible mistake? I watched the episode but i still don’t understand, and who was Morgana’s ally? Oh i think they mean Aithusa

    • http://twitter.com/Numberpengu Pengu

Mordred probably tamed Aithusa to help Morgana and go against Merlin

      • Anonymous

I don’t think that will happen, but I hope not because i like Aithusa and if Aithusa turns on Merlin, the writers have some serious issues…..

    • Anonymous

yes, the baby dragon — and Merlin’s mistake in allowing it to hatch as it has become Morgana’s ally.

      • Anonymous

Do we know for sure that it has become Morgana’s ally for good? Because i hope not, i thought Aithusa was meant to be a good sign for Albion as it is a white dragon, although i am guessing that it will be explored in series 5….

        • Anonymous

No, we don’t.  Morgana looks surprised to be alive and to see the dragon. My thought is that Aithusa gave her a second chance to see the light of a new day and thus, gain redemption.

Depending what the writers plan for Morgana, she could very easily transition into Morgana the Healer as part of a redemptive arc for Season 5.  According to Geoffrey of Monmouth’s book on Merlin, Morgana is one of the nine magical sisters of Avalon who are healing a wounded Arthur after his battle in Camlann. Or, as her prophecy showed earlier in an earlier episode of Series 4, Morgana will lead an army against Arthur and his allies leaving hundreds dead with old Merlin asking, “Is this what you wanted, Morgana?” which I’d like to see in Series 5.

          • Lupin Zhang

KIilgarrah once warned Merlin of the union formed between Modred and Morgana. So I don’t think Aithusa was to give Morgana a second chance to turn good. Yet, it’s not possible that Aithusa acted without a reason. My guess is, Aithusa was acting because both Morgana and dragons are creatures of Old Religion. Aithusa kinda was in solidarity with Morgana.

          • Anonymous

Maybe.  But redeeming Morgana even in the short term would make a nice fit with the scabbard incident.

I think you replied 3 times there, there is a button called edit you know xD Oh i am just editting this again(how ironic) anyway if it was not for you i would not have any notifications so thanks :P Oh and i loved Aithusa too but now he is bad-ish

    • Anonymous

Yeah, sorry about that,:) I don’t think you can delete it though, and no problem thanks to you too. I don’t think we know for certain if he’s bad, i mean he could just be helping Morgana because he is a wonderful little dragon, who knows!

I still see lots of possibilities and then again Morgana may be needed to kill later for the good of Albion and not the bad, maybe it is good but seen as bad

I quite like the idea the Mordred has taimed Aithussa, it would be a good twist. But this doesn’t really fit in with the existing story since merlin is the last dragon lord, unless it turned out that Mordred also was one.

I think for the time being that Aithussa healed Morgana because she wanted to restore the old religion and is therefore an ally. Since Arthur has yet to fufill his destiny in creating a land of tolerance, he is still seen as an enemy by magical creatures. It could be that Aithussa is a permentent antagonist and this could vaguely link in with the red and white dragons in the legend with the white representing Camelot’s enemies.

I’m pleased that some of the other blogs/board have picked up on the Red/White Dragon motiff and it makes for interesting reading (see MorganaForever on the merlin wikia blog).

I sort of wish the Merlin people hadn’t deleted the scene in S4ep01 or 02  where Arthur gives his mother’s sigil to Merlin.  That sigil has has loads of symbolism which could explain a lot about this show and the dragons in the context of Arthurian legend and would be worth exploring while Arthur’s act of giving that sigil as a gift to Merlin could mean a lot in terms of the legends.

But, I also wish they’d shown the scene where Agravaine professes his undying love to Morgana… that would have explained a lot.

THERE IS A sCENE OF AGRAVAINE TELLING MORGANA HE LOVES HER?!?!?!?!?!??!

That is so creepy, he is 40-something, nothing like Morgana, it is just…. brrrr

I’m still not sure whether he is morgana’s uncle aswell as Arthur’s or just an admirer of her, I was hoping it would clearly be revealed in the finale.

While re-watching some Merlins, I’d also hoped that the show would have a reveal or something about the scabbard or lack thereof.

          • Anonymous

I wondered that because in some variants of the legend, it has potent powers itself.

        • Anonymous

At one time, I thought that Agravaine might be related to Morgana either as a father or uncle which would explain his pledge of “undying love” but the deleted scene makes that seem less likely.

Maybe.  But, Kilgarrah a dragon claims kinship with Merlin who represents what is good in magic and recommended that Merlin let Morgana and Modred die to assure Albion.  It doesn’t make sense that Aithusa would not feel the same…

Everything you have to say, i find very interesting. I noticed that king Lot hasn’t been mentioned before Merlin series 4 and wonder if his introduction to the show implies that the writers intend to use him in the future. Perhaps as an ally or even husband of  Morgana? In Morgana’s vision, there is a battle and I doubt that she would have access to so many men, so its likely that they would belong to an ally.

If Aithussa is not instructed by another Dragonlord to heal Morgana, then i think he does so with the concern that she seeks the return of the old religion, not being aware of the overall picture. Being able to prophercise is powerful magic is something that not even Merlin can do, Kilgarah can because he is an ancient creature. Yet if this is the permanent association with the dragons to rivalling factions, then it has got to be more than this. What is to stop Merlin from using his Dragonlord powers from controlling Aithussa aswell?

Thank you for what you wrote.   I thought that Lot’s kingdom was Cenred’s old kingdom and so Morgana would have allies there since “Lot’s no friend of the (Arthur?) Pendragon.” Merlin could always visit the crystal caves or use the crystal of Niatide for prophecy.  But, your version of things and mine aren’t mutually exclusive: Morgana could have been brought back to aid in the restoration of the Old Religion as part of a redemptive arc.

I’m a big fan of the Heroic Archetype school of story telling which Merlin-o-verse seems to follow in each of the stories/episodes and as the central theme for each of the Series/Seasons:

        MERLIN’S JOURNEY:

Stage 1: Departure: The hero is called to adventure, although he is reluctant to accept. (Season 1)

Stage 2: Initiation: The hero crosses a threshold into a new, more
dangerous world, gaining a more mature perspective. (Season 2)

Stage 3: The Road of Trials: The hero is given supernatural aid, endures
tests of strength, resourcefulness, and endurance. (Season 3)

Stage 4: The Innermost Cave: The hero faces a great trial. It is a
period of undoing, and change. Because of this trial, the hero is reborn
in some way: physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Through this
experience, the hero changes internally. (Season 4)

Stage 5: Return and Reintegration with Society: The hero uses his new wisdom to restore the land of Albion (Season 5?)

Arthur enjoys two similar journeys as 1) Warrior-Prince ending in Season 3 ep13 and as 2) Warrior-King/Ruler beginning in Season 4.

And, these stages aren’t just limited to the 5 above but can include other arcs such as redemptive arcs, abortive arcs (that is something that would predictably occur but just before it does, something stops it— Morgana’s death, Aithusa rescuing her) and prophylactic arcs (that is, likely events are prevented from happening long before they have the chance to occur— Merlin robbing Morgana of her powers before she can use them against Arthur.)

Based on HA, these people would be good candidates for some sort of redemptive story line/arc and I think Aithusa and others who serve the Triple Goddess (symbol: Triskele) could be part of that.

        1) Gwen, because she is fallen in Arthur’s eyes.  In the HA she has betrayed Uther and Arthur. In S4Ep1-2, her outward devotion to the king is for the selfish reason of making Arthur happy.  It is a far cry from the Gwen of S1E13. And, in admitting such to Arthur, she tarnishes her good heart (the good heart was why Arthur fell in love with her in S1E13) and tarnished found her suspect and banished her in S4. For redemption, Gwen would need to actually or symbolically forgive Uther while Uther would have to do the same (for instance, Uther as a Spirit could reveal the enchanted bracelet that led to Gwen’s betrayal).

        2) Freya, because she is fallen for having taken the lives of innocents in her Bastet form.  On her right forearm she bears the mark of the Triskele (for a possible association with Aithusa? and the Triple Goddess).  Merlin tried to use his right hand to set her pyre and put her soul to rest but sadly he had to use the left.  The Left Hand Path in the Merlin-o-verse seems to be bad.  Since the Lady of the Lake is prominent as Merlin’s lover in the romances, it would be natural to have her go through a few eps of a redemptive story line.

        3) Lancelot, he died for a noble cause but became a tormented soul as a shade when raised by Morgana and having killed himself at her request was bound to go to the Wood of Suicides of Circle 7 of the Inferno. Though he was redeemed by Merlin (who uses his Right Hand), his reputation for nobility and honor were not.  This needs to be restored and should leave most fans feeling empty if it is not.

        4) Morgause, she died for a noble cause

And  5) Uther, 6) Morgana and 7) Agravaine would have a lot more issues than space allows to print. But, there are any number of ways to tell these tales.

Anyway, if Katie McGrath likens Morgana to Darth Vader (who had a redemptive arc— (after George Lucas released Star Wars 1-3, the Hero shifted from Luke Skywalker (SW 4-6) to Anakin Skywalker and the entire series became Anakin’s rise, fall, and redemption (SW 1-6) which some fans had a difficult time accepting) then, I’d expect Morgana to get the same. There are any number of ways the story teller could do that. And, they could include other aspects of the Legend— one of which would be
the enchanted scabbard, the other being the enchanted cloak (of invisibility or destruction?) that Arthur
        obtains from Morgana.

Sorry about the length of this…
