    and the round table!!!

Well, it looks like that Mordred is the new enemy within.  It is his mission to kill Arthur, if not immediately, then eventually.  It will be very intersting to see how that will turn out.
Gaius is oviously still alive in the earlier part of the season.

Is there anything to suggest that Gaius will not be around for the second half? I have to say i’m a bit uneasy about having an enemy within for the third time. Agravaine’s betrayal was unfortunately a repeat of Morgana’s of the previous series. I hope that we will not have another series of Arthur constantly being warned about Mordred only for something disastrous to happen in the finale. That is not to set a shadow on Series 5, for there are many things to look forward to which I can’t wait for such as the entry of the Saxons and the forming of the Round table order.

No, there is nothing at all to say that Gaius will not be around any longer!   I am just not sure for how much longer he can be Merlin’s mentor and advisor.  Merlin needs to start making his own decisions, and considering Gaius’s age it seems likely to me that he will leave the show at one point in season 5.  Of course I could be completely wrong! :)
I totally agree with you on your point about the enemy within.  There are many themes repeated in Merlin  (the fight about Camelot in the finales of season 3 and 4, Gwen getting kidnapped, Arthur getting enchanted,,, and I could go on) But doing the’ enermy within story’ for the third time would really take the biscuit!

Sorry, I wasn’t being picky, I just wanted to know whether there was any more info leaked. The only way we have been getting news about Merlin recently is by scattered Twitter comments or set reports so I wondered whether there was anything I had missed. I agree though, Gaius is essentially what Merlin will become to Arthur. So as long as he is in the show, Merlin cannot fufill his destiny, Gaius also must be very old by series 5, in his 80’s by my reckoning. Morgan’s comments in an earlier interview suggest that Merlin’s magic may be revealed next series, how this relates to Mordred as a knight will be interesting to discover. My theory is that Mordred, knowing that Merlin has magic, will use his trusted position at the court to ensare Merlin so he is forced to reveal his magic in Arthur’s presence. This scenario could be the ‘Merlin’ equivalent of Mordred’s exposure of Lancelot and Guinevere.

Mordred as a knight is completely justified by the legends and it really is no surprise that the producers have decided to make their own take on his betrayal, its just a shame that Merlin has a history of traitors. Of course this could be done differently to Agravaine and Morgana, but I doubt this very much. Merlin is aware of  Mordred’s destiny to kill Arthur and his close connections with Morgana, these are reasons enough to suspect of Mordred’s true intentions. I see that  Merlin will warn Arthur about him only to be ignored.

There was absolutely no offense taken!  :)
I think your theory about Merlin having to reveal his magic because of Mordred is a very plausible one. Although I am really excited about season 5 and an even darker feel to it, I am not sure if a third ‘enemy within’ scenario can be done successfully!

          • Maybe they’ll put a twist on the enemy within plot this season and have Mordred eventually defecting to Arthur’s side because of Arthur’s nobility.  I understand Mordred holding a grudge against Merlin, but he ought to be grateful to Arthur for helping him escape Uther’s death sentence.  I’d actually like to see Merlin apologize to Mordred.  Although Kilgarrah told Merlin that Mordred would someday kill Arthur, Mordred was just a little child and shouldn’t have been punished for something he hadn’t done yet.  I assume that Mordred and Morgana are in league together.

  • Oh hell yeah, Knights in shining shades ;)

I am curious about Gaius because Killgarah (The Great Dragon) said that Gaius is already doomed to Merlin in Le Morte d’Arthur ( I think) and Killgarah is always right and he wouldn’t lie to Merlin. – Morgause

    • I don’t remember that. ??
