Seems like a whole season of worst mistakes by Merlin.

    • Candy

Merlin did his best and those mistakes you’re talking about aren’t his faults. That’s destiny and fate that have to be accomplished even when Merlin does everything he can to not let destiny win.

      • Shall_be_lifted_Nevermore

Nevertheless, Merlin screwed up pretty badly a bunch of times. There are so many different decisions he could have made…the main one, of course, being the three creepy-as-hell ladies and the “No, Arthur. You can’t let eeevil magic into the land, not even to save a friend.” Now THAT…I wanted to strangle him after that episode. Well, not really. But I was this close.

        • Nimueh123

Listen to the audio commentaries of the DVD if you should get it. Johnny and Colin explain here why Merlin thinks he has to say the dreaded lines. (Not that I agree with it, but at least Johnny explains – I think Colin would have preferred a reveal at the beginning of season 5, too)
Within of the context of season 5 as we have seen it, Merlin is really ‘led up the path’ by the prophecy he has seen. The threat of Mordred’s destiny hangs over him like a dark shadow. In his depair he does everything he can possibly think of to avoid it. Some decisions he takes for these reasons are dreadfully wrong, particularly not trusting Mordred. We feel he should know better than trying to change the future that has been written for ages (did not work in The Crystal Cave), but at the same time he cannot just stand by doing nothing, either!
So, as frustrating as Merlin’s actions are for all of us, we cannot really judge him for them.

          • Shall_be_lifted_Nevermore

Oh, I’m not judging Merlin. Not really. I get that there’s this whole Big Plan thing the universe has in store. But he still made those decisions, and just because he had good intentions doesn’t necessarily mean that a good deal of the blame doesn’t fall on his shoulders. Yeah, I do feel sorry for him and his Oedipus gig he has going on there. Doesn’t mean I can’t be angry at him.

On the other hand, I do like this new, matured, Machiavellian-style Merlin, who’s willing to let someone die for the bigger picture. You have to admit…season 1 Merlin would definitely not have the conviction, guts, whatever, to make the same decisions that season 5 Merlin is making. Ironically though, innocent, trusting, season 1 Merlin would have greater benefited Camelot in this time than gaurded, wise, season 5 Merlin.

          • Nimueh123

I also love the more mature, ‘ready to strike when it’s needed’ Merlin of season 5. Saying that I would have liked the story arcs going in a different direction. Keeping the reveal to the very last (second, the way it looks) has spoilt it for me this season.

          • Koshei

The problem with this season is that we will have so little time for reveal and because of that dramatic potential and development of characters would be too cut extremely short. Seems that Merlin is perfectly used with being in closet. Speaking in modern terms he is like a unhappy fellow, who is too afraid to let his friends know who he really is, but at the same time reveal frustrates and frightens him. It is bad idea to postpone his “coming out” to the very last episodes, I would love to see some episodes about how he gets used to life without a secret.

          • kenyaleesmith

I agree. Three episodes were dedicated to Gwen. Mithian pretty much took an episode, the Arthur’s Bane could have covered all of that in one episode. The magic reveal should have been earlier. The repercussions of that will not completely unfold in the last two episodes.

          • kenyaleesmith

I wonder about that. Mordred’s girlfriend would have killed Arthur if given the chance. Mordred would have turned on Arthur, it was destiny and fate all rolled into one. I even think Gaius gave Merlin some bad advice this season out of protection for him instead of what was best. Arthur did not listen at some crucial points though he trusted Merlin more this season then in the previous ones. There were mistakes by everyone involved. Morgana’s hatred, where does it end? It would not end with Arthur’s death. There is so much going on I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

          • MikeAP001

True, but I think that Merlin could have changed things enough so that what he’d seen comes true, Mordred stabs Arthur but Arthur doesn’t die. Remember Back to the Future I?

In this case, Arthur crumples to the ground, Mordred stands over him. Morgana in triumph emerges from the flames of war. She turns to slay Mordred but Merlin intervenes. He and Mordred combine to strip Morgana of her power. And, she falls to the ground. In pain, she begs Emrys for help.

To her horror, she sees Arthur rises. He removes a sword proof vest beneath his armor and congratulates Merlin and Mordred on a plan well done and they stand over the carnage vowing to rebuild, not a nation, but an empire the like the world has never known.

Roll Credits… the show ends, Merlin’s vision came true, Morgana’s vision came true, and I’m satisfied with that ending…

        • kenyaleesmith

I think Merlin made the decisions based on the information that was provided to him. When his opinion of not restoring magic to land was made it was in an effort to allow Mordred to die. He did not know Mordred would have been allowed to leave or he would have chosen differently. He saved Arthur’s life on countless of occasions, he recognized Gwen’s possession by Morgana and healed her of it. He even attempted to make things right between Mordred and Arthur last week. There would have been no decision that he could have made that would alter the coming events. Alator had it saved, the prophets spoke of it long ago, Kilgharrah knew, it was inevitable.

The question now is how will it end. I do not want to see Arthur or Merlin die. Kilgharrah looks like he is already dying slowly. Aithusa is still around though Merlin can still control her when he needs to. Morgana and Mordred both have powerful magic and Arthur still does not know about Merlin’s magic. There is a lot to wrap up in two episodes. It is going to be like a movie. I just hope they give the fans what they have been wanting, especially the magic reveal to Arthur and the recognition Merlin deserves. Also, what about the peace for the five kingdoms. This is suppose to happen during Arthur’s reign. If he dies how will this come about? I think Balinor will show up to Merlin after he loses his powers to help him get it back. Merlin was born of magic and his magic comes from the earth. I do not think that Morgana can totally strip Merlin of his powers but he will have to believe in order to get it back. This is just my opinion.

‘There’s a surprising return of an old character’ Balinor
‘Merlin getting drunk is the worst mistake he’ll ever make’ Merlin getting drunk?? Are they serious???
‘Someone really shouldn’t trust blondes’ Gwaine
‘“I knew you’d discover my secret in the end” Merlin to Gwaine
‘Merlin cries. Will you?’ I think I will. THAT ‘Noooooo’ is killing.
‘“I hoped never to hear that name again” Morgana about Emrys. Judging by her temper tantrum she will hear his name again :D

      Maybe Nimueh? :O

      • Nimueh123

LOL. Sorry to disappoint ;) As Balinor is listed as a character for 4.12 it is pretty safe to assume it is him.

        • http://doctorwhotv.co.uk/the-case-for-utopia-42412.htm TardisSnowman

But they said “surprising” it’s not very surprising if he’s already been listed is it? :P

You’re probably right, though I am annoyed they never once brought back Nimueh, she was brilliant! :D

          • Nimueh123

Good point. Maybe they are referring to the alien that appeared in ep. 2?

          • http://doctorwhotv.co.uk/the-case-for-utopia-42412.htm TardisSnowman

Oooo yes! I always wondered what happened to it…hmmm maybe! :D

I can’t quite get my head around that in 5 days time one of my favourite shows will have finished, possibly for ever! :'(

          • Nimueh123

It will a HUGE void. I really do not think that there will be any more.

      • VERITASERUMUK

I’ve wanted to see Michelle Ryan return to Merlin for years but alas I don’t think it will happen :(

    • #1merlinfan

Balinor died…while we’re on that track though….maybe Freya??

Merlin “getting drunk” is probably just another instance of Gaius covering for Merlin by saying he went to the tavern…just one time too many!
“I knew you’d discover my secret”-I think Morgana or Arthur. Probably Morgana.
      ;) Can’t wait! Last finale…

    • #1merlinfan

It could be Sefa, that servant girl whose Druid father worked for Morgana and was killed by the Knights at the beginning of Season 5. Though that doesn’t seem too surprising. Balinor would be cool, but then why is Merlin a Dragon Lord if his father didn’t really die? Unless he returns from the dead, which would be a bit weird.

  • Candy

“Merlin cries. Will you?” Of course I will! Each time Colin Morgan conveys sad feelings, I cry. He makes Merlin so heartbreaking!

  • http://twitter.com/AislinCeivun Aislin

Merlin cries. Will you? – Don’t wanna, but probably will. Colin’s scream at the end of the last preview was definitely heartbreaking. >.<

    Cant Wait!

  • VERITASERUMUK

Wow. If this is in the episode you’re good :)

    • Dusty

Ha! I hope so. I usually suck at these but I have been so frustrated wanting spoilers I just stared and stared and stared…

      • Nimueh123

Sounds brilliant to me and fits in with the plot perfectly! Well done!

  • #1merlinfan

Long awaited face-off…Merlin and Morgana or Merlin and Arthur??
