Merlin: Arthur’s Bane: Part 2 Preview

Merlin’s adventures continue next Saturday on BBC1 with the 2nd episode of 13, Arthur’s Bane: Part 2.

Ancient prophecies of Mordred weigh heavy on Merlin, for not even he can sway Arthur from his chosen path. As dawn breaks across the icy tundra, Merlin and Arthur are close to exhaustion. With each tortured step, the fortress of Ismere looms ever nearer and Merlin’s fear intensifies. What game is Mordred playing? And what powerful secrets are Morgana and the druid Ruadan (Liam Cunningham) searching for amongst its twisted catacombs? It seems like this time, not even Merlin can stop Arthur from walking right into the lion’s den… For in this bleak and transient wilderness, only one thing is certain: the great trial for Albion has finally begun.

Not rate the episode poll? :(

Anyway I may as well share my thoughts here.

I liked it. The characters, setting, action, drama everything was great. For a moment I thoght they were going to be doing the ‘enemy within’ storyline AGAIN with Sefa but it seems to have been just for this episode so I don’t mind much. I hope to see how the decision to sentence her affects Gwen next episode. Speaking of Gwen it’s great to see her as Queen she was brilliant in the episode. As was Morgana, although I would have liked to have seen more of her. Does anyone know what the ‘for two years I saw nothing but Darkness’ thing was about? I’m not sure if I like the new Mordred but it’s early days. Overall it was very good.

As a single episode I’d give it:

    7.5/10

But I don’t like to judge part one’s on there own so that will undoubtedly change after next week when I have seen the whole story. A great start to the Series. As for the preview it looks great. I can’t wait for next week.

Did you see the alien?!?!? What did you make of that?

      • AmyPondIsAwesome

        Yeah…

I’ve got no idea what it is.

What did you think of the episode?

        • TardisBoy

          Same as you 7.5/10 :D

Well if you think about it, maybe it is just me, but does that tower in the northern lands look a bit like a rocket from outer space? :D

Morgana was held in prison for two years, not entirely sure by who

    Great second tralier!

I loved Episode 1. After the preview given here last week I was really worried that the Arthur/Merlin relationship would have not changed at all. But it has.
    – Merlin gives as good as he gets – and Arthur takes it in good humour. Yes, they do bicker – but when they bicker they do it on a level playing field and Merlin does not hold back to criticise his king or to give his opinion.
    – Arthur shows a couple of times that he does care about Merlin as much as he cares about his knights. He looks after him on two occasions in a very warmhearted manner.
Well and we know that Merlin is looking after Arthur, anyway ….
    – It is also clear that Merlin is desperate to tell Arthur – he hints at it at least twice!
    – I thought Mordred was fab. He can produce a similar scary look with chill factor 10..as Asa.
    – the biggest surprise: how did a glowy little alien get lost in Merlinland?? Admittedly he looks great for a magical being, but I am not so sure about him/her/it at the moment.
A brilliant start to the season overall. Absolutely loved seeing Merlin strong and self assured.

What did you think of Gwen?

      • Nimueh123

I really liked Gwen as a fully fledged queen. She showed that she is still the same kind Gwen we know, but also that she can take tough decisions on her own and that she has a good thinking head on her shoulders.

Part 1 was my first episode so I’ll try my best to comprehend it.

Arthur is king and that other woman at the start is the queen. Merlin is Arthur’s servant and is magic, but Arthur doesn’t know this. Merlin also has a pet talking dragon (I’m so jealous). Morgana used too be good but then turned evil. Morgana and her people hate Arthur’s people, hence why she wants to kill them. Morgana is looking for a key under her tower-building-palace-thingy. She has kidnapped Arthur’s men to mine for it. Arthur has set out to find his men and there is a prophecy-thing that he will die in battle. At the end of the episode Arthur and Merlin are captured and there’s a strange blue alien in a cave.

Anything I said that was wrong?

I found ‘Arthur’s Bane part 1′ a fantastic opener that was impressive in just about every way:

It is a good change to have a snowy environment in Merlin. The other locations that featured over the course of the episode were superb. Really liked the ruins Ruadan was dwelling in, when his daughter came to inform him that Arthur had left Camelot.

Acting was top notch as usual from all the main cast. Alex Vhalos already seems to be a wise casting choice for an older Mordred, he has this wonderful voice that brings out the inner darkness of the character.

The story progressed well, keeping me interested throughout. I liked the way the writers wrote Gwen though I was surprised that she didn’t seem burdened by sentencing her maid to death. I suppose she has gotten used to her responsibilities as Queen in the three year gap between Series 4 and 5.
